La narración muestra la paulatina aceptación por parte del personaje de su nueva condición, estudiando el papel de la mujer en la historia y la sociedad, incluso en temas éticos y morales (sexualidad, homosexualidad, derechos de la mujer) contrarios a la época en que fue escrito.
