La royauté dans l’Atacora concerne essentiellement les waaba qui depuis des lustres lunes ont eu une succession avant, pendant et après les indépendances. Elle se vit aussi bien de façon clanique que ethnique. Mais, pendant longtemps, ce peuple fut confondu aux somba et aux sociétés dites acéphales dans les récits exploratoires et études ethnographiques comme ceux de P. Mercier (1968). Ces confusions n’ont toutes fois pas pu perturber la pérennité de l’organisation de ce peuple peu présent dans les écris pour sa spécificité dans le nord Bénin. C’est pour cela que la présente étude s’intéresse à montrer la particularité de la vie royale à travers l’historique de quelques clans en s’appuyant sur les données empiriques issues d’entretiens qualitatifs, de lectures et de témoignages. Les modèles fonctionnalistes et constructivistes font retenir que la royauté dans ce peuple met le roi au service de sa population et assure la sauvegarde et la sécurité ethnique, du maintien de l’ordre sociale en vue de conserver l’harmonie et le respect de la hiérarchie dans les prises de décisions. Contrairement aux descriptions de R. Cornevain (1981) sur les sociétés dites acéphales du nord Bénin.
