The RoshRabbeinu Asher ben Yechiel was a prominent Talmudic commentator, posek, and one of the Ba’alei Hatosafot. He was born, lived, and taught in Germany, fleeing with his family to Spain after the imprisonment and death of his teacher, Maharam of Rothenburg. He served as the leading authority in Spain alongside the Rashba. Due to the tremendous impact of his work, Hilkhot HaRosh, his halakhic authority was so widely regarded that he was one of three sages selected by R. Yosef Karo to serve as the 'Beit Din' for his Beit Yosef and Shulchan Arukh.Or Asher ben Yechiel, sometimes Asheri) (1250 or 1259 - 1327) was an eminent rabbi and Talmudist best known for his abstract of Talmudic law. His yahrzeit is on 9 Cheshvan.The Rosh was probably born in Cologne, Holy Roman Empire, and died in Toledo. His family was prominent for learning and piety, his father Yechiel was a Talmudist, and one of his ancestors was Rabbi Eliezer ben Nathan (the RaABaN). Asher had eight sons, the most prominent of whom were Jacob (author of the Arba’ah Turim) and Judah.Orchot Chaim, an essay on ethics, was written for his sons. It begins with the comment, 'Distance yourself from haughtiness, with the essence of distancing.' Orchot Chaim is today an important work of musar literature.רבי אשר בן יחיאל (ה’י’, 1250 - ט’ בחשון ה’פ'ח, 1327), המכונה הרא'ש, היה מגדולי פרשני התלמוד והפוסקים ובעל השפעה מכרעת על עיצוב ההלכה היהודית הרא'ש נולד באשכנז, כיום גרמניה, בין השנים ה’ה’-ה’י’. אביו רבי יחיאל בן אורי היה גדול בתורה והיה מתכתב בהלכה עם גדולי דורו. מלבד זאת היה ידוע בחסידותו המופלגת ונמנה בין חסידי אשכנז. החכם המפורסם רבי אליעזר בן נתן (הראב'ן) היה בין אבות אבותיובראשית ימיו למד הרא'ש אצל אביו רבי יחיאל. בהמשך החל ללמוד בישיבתו של המהר'ם מרוטנבורג, שהיה הפוסק החשוב והבלתי מעורער באשכנז באותה התקופה, ועד מהרה הפך לתלמידו המובהק. בין הרב והתלמיד שררו יחסי הערכה וחיבה הדדיים, והם עמדו תכופות בחלופת מכתבים הלכתית. במהלך השנים הפנה הרא'ש עשרות שאלות בהלכה אל המהר'ם, וזה השיב לו עליהם בכבוד גדול ובהערכה. על ההערכה הרבה שרכש המהר'ם כלפי תלמידו הנאמן ניתן ללמוד מאחת התשובות ששלח לו בו הוא פותח בהפלגת שבחיוכל דתיליד ליה אימיה כמוך תלד, יניק וחכים, דורש ומסכים, סוגר ומקליד, כל קמחא קמח, וקמחא דאמך סולת מנופה כשלג וכגליד, דעת שפתיך בהיר צח ונהיר, בלא לקוי וחליד, לפיד שלהבת אהבתך כאש לפידות ולפיד, אף על פי שהשמים ביני ובינך כרשפי חבתך לבי יסליד, אלופי ומיודעי מורי הרב רבי אשר שיחיה, אשר מדי דברי בך ברוך לקחתיך ולא אשיב עד אם ברכתיך
