Het begin van de bevrijding van Polen door het Rode Leger en de Poolse Krijgers, de oprichting van het Poolse Comité voor Nationale Bevrijding baarde de reactie zorgen. In de hoop politieke moeilijkheden te creëren voor de Sovjetlegers die Polen bevrijden en te voorkomen dat Poolse arbeiders hun macht vestigen, beval het bevel van het leger van Krajowa op 1 augustus 1944 om een opstand te beginnen in Warschau. De opstand werd in overleg met de emigrantenregering opgevoerd, maar in het geheim vanuit het Sovjet-commando en zonder rekening te houden met de specifieke situatie aan het front. Het doel van de reactie was om Warschau in beslag te nemen voordat de Sovjettroepen naderden en de macht over te dragen aan de 'Provinciale Raad van Ministers' die op 26 juli werd opgericht als tegenwicht voor het Poolse Comité voor de Nationale Bevrijding. De opstand was zo getimed dat deze samenviel met de reis van de premier van de Poolse emigrantenregering Mikolajczyk, die in Londen naar Moskou was voor onderhandelingen met de Sovjetregering. De organisatoren van de opstand en hun opdrachtgevers in Poolse emigratiekringen in Londen baseerden hun berekeningen op de veronderstelling dat de Britten de rebellen politieke steun en militaire bijstand zullen verlenen.
