Ստեփան Եղիայի Զորյանը (Առաքելյան )ծնվել է 1889 թվականի սեպտեմբերի 3-ին Վանաձորում, նահապետական գյուղացու ընտանիքում: Նա իր առաջին հոգևոր սնունդն ստացել է տատի ու մոր պատմած գրավիչ հեքիաթներից: Գրագիտությունն էլ սովորել է տատից ու մորից: Ստեփանը նախնական գիտելիքներ ստացել է Զաքար վարժապետի գաղտնի դպրոցում, որի մասին նուրբ հումորով նկարագրել է Մի կյանքի պատմություն նշանավոր վեպում: Հայկական դպրոցները փակվելուց հետո հայրը նրան տանում է ռուսական դպրոց`չմառանալով նրան հիշեցնել իր ով լինելը: Բայց տանելուց առաջ նա ինձ կանգնեցրեց Վարդան Մամիկոնյանի նկարի առաջ,գլխարկը վերցրեց և մատը մեկնեց դեպի նա... -Գնա,որդիս,լավ սովորի ամեն ինչ,բայց երբեք չմոռանաս,որ դու հայ ես,հայոց լեզուն ամենից լավ պիտի սովորես...: Ապագա գրողը սրբությամբ կատարեց հոր ավանդը և դարձավ հայոց լեզվի վարպետներից մեկը: Հինգ-վեց տարվա ընթացքում լույս են տեսնում Ցանկապատ (1939), Հազարան բլբուլ (1925), Ծովանը (1925), Պատերազմ, Խնձորի այգին ժողովածուները, որոնք Զորյանի աշխարհայացքի լայնացման, կյանքի սոցիալական ու քաղաքական բարդությունները մարդկային ճակատագրերում բեկելու կարողության, ազգային ու եվրոպական արձակի լավագույն ավանդույթները ստեղծագործաբար յուրացնելու հատկության արտահայտություններն են: Պատմվածքներում Զորյանը հանդես է բերել սուր դիտողականություն, մարդու հոգեբանության գաղտնարանները թափանցելու կարողություն։ Նկարագրելով հերոսների կյանքը՝ նա բացահայտել է իրականության ներքին հակասությունները։ Մարդկանց հոգեբանության վրա սեփականատիրական կրքերի ավերիչ ազդեցությունն է պատկերված Ցանկապատը ժողովածուում։ Հանուն շահի մարդիկ պատրաստ են ոտնատակ տալու նույնիսկ արյունակցական կապերն ու բարոյական սկզբունքները։ Սոցիալական չարիքի պատկերման առումով Զորյանի ստեղծագործության լավագույն էջերից է Խնձորի այգին պատմվածքը (1917)։ Զորյանը նոր խոսք ասաց պատմվածքի ժանրում և կանգնեց արձակի փոքր ձևերի վարպետների կողքին:
