On the Margins of Old Books

'On the Margins of Old Books' is a collection of imaginative and insightful essays by the renowned French critic and member of the Académie française, Jules Lemaître. In this work, Lemaître presents a unique literary experiment, providing 'sequels,' extensions, and contemplative reflections on some of the most iconic masterpieces of Western literature. From the ancient epics of Homer to the classical dramas of Racine and Molière, Lemaître steps into the margins of these revered texts to explore the unwritten fates of characters and the hidden depths of familiar plots. Written with the grace, wit, and analytical precision for which Lemaître was celebrated, the book serves as both a profound tribute to the literary canon and a creative expansion of it. Readers are invited to revisit the worlds of 'The Odyssey', 'The Iliad', and various French classics through the lens of a master critic who approaches these works with both scholarly reverence and a playful, inventive spirit. This volume is an essential read for lovers of classic literature and literary theory, offering a bridge between traditional criticism and creative storytelling.
