Peter Hartley wrote the poems in this book in a little over a year but they represent many of the joys and some of the sorrows of a lifetime. They reflect a love of Labrador retrievers and penguins, cryptic crosswords, mountains and travel, wild and lonely places, the poetry of Hopkins, baroque music (especially Handel), a dislike for most modern art and architecture, and an extremely odd attitude towards cats. While nearing completion the author’s partner was struck down by Motor Neurone Disease. This book is dedicated to her and to the immense courage she has displayed in its shadow.

    K D Halliwell
The ambiguously titled Love Bites is the debut offering from K D Halliwell, a Milton Keynes based author who describes the collection as a document of her twenties. Original and with a format that stands out from the ordinary, it is proving particularly well-received by those who “don’t normally like poetry”. Originally written by hand, the author has traversed a fine line betw...

  • Polishing the Silver
    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

  • One Kiss
    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

Swollen seas, erotic monsters, Greek passion gone Latin, deftlyThis 1st-century AD Latin version of the earlier Greek epic features exotic lands, wondrous monsters and a sea voyage over swells of young love. Valerius Flaccus lent sharp Roman refinements and erotic passion to the tale, which are skillfully sustained in this careful and appealing modern translation in English ver...

  • Songs of My Life and Death
    Peter Hartley
The poetry in this book is formal: unlike modern 'free' verse it rhymes and it scans. (If rhyme and scansion was good enough for Shakespeare and Spenser then it is good enough for the present author.) A great many of the verses here have been prompted by the bravely borne mental and physical suffering and uncomplaining stoicism of the writer’s beloved Dina as she died little mo...
  • The Grumpy Squirrel
    Peter Hartley
Why is the little red squirrel so grumpy? Everything had been carefully planned, or so he thought. Much of the autumn had been spent burying his nuts around his beautiful garden ready to be collected once winter arrived. But now winter was here and large ’things’ had appeared in the garden, a pirate ship, a teepee, a fairy village, a tree house and a huge swing that were now hi...
