Das Ungleichgewicht zwischen Sauerstoffzufuhr und -verbrauch ist der Auslöser für eine Reihe von Ereignissen, die zu MODS führen, was wiederum einen verlängerten Aufenthalt auf der Intensivstation oder im Krankenhaus zur Folge hat, was wiederum die Kosten für das Gesundheitswesen und die Nutzung von Ressourcen in die Höhe treibt. Die zentralvenöse Sauerstoffsättigung und das Laktat wurden in verschiedenen klinischen Situationen verwendet, um die Angemessenheit der Perfusion zu beurteilen, z. B. bei Schock und Sepsis. Die Kombination dieser beiden Marker kann als Instrument zur Beurteilung des Auftretens von okkulter Hypoperfusion und der Angemessenheit der Reanimation eingesetzt werden.
