Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham is a semi-autobiographical novel that follows Philip Carey, a sensitive and clubfooted orphan, as he searches for meaning and fulfillment in life. After trying various paths-studying art in Paris, pursuing medicine in London, and exploring religion and philosophy-Philip struggles with feelings of inadequacy and aimlessness. His turbulent and self-destructive love affair with the cruel and shallow Mildred Rogers becomes a central test of his emotions and self-worth. Ultimately, Philip learns to accept the imperfections of life and finds peace in simple happiness, work, and human connection.
