Fuertemente influido por Montaigne y el romanticismo francés, es considerado como uno de los más grandes prosistas del siglo XIX iberoamericano y uno de los más fecundos escritores que tuvo el Ecuador en el siglo XIX. Sus obras responden a un pensamiento liberal. Montalvo defendió la libertad individual y el crecimiento económico con la participación de la empresa privada.
