Ze względu na ograniczenia barwy dźwięku i techniki gry na oboju w późniejszych epokach stylistycznych, a mianowicie w klasycyzmie i romantyzmie, powstało niewiele utworów solowych na ten instrument. W romantyzmie literatura solowa na obój jest skromna. W XXI wieku obój ponownie doświadczył rozwoju, zgodnie z dążeniami jego wykonawców oraz zapotrzebowaniem na współczesną, pełną emocji muzykę. Okres baroku stanowi dla oboju pierwszy szczytowy moment, nie tylko pod względem formy, ale także repertuaru.
