In den 1970er Jahren konzipierte Ekkehard Krippendorff seinen politökonomischen Ansatz der kritischen Friedensforschung. Seine These lautet, dass Außenpolitik und der Einsatz militärischer Gewalt in der Außenpolitik auf den objektiven Interessen der staatlich verfassten Gesellschaft beruhen, die in den Reproduktionsbedingungen dieser Gesellschaft wurzeln. Leider hat kaum jemand diesen Ansatz im Rahmen einer empirischen Studie konkret angewandt. Dies geschieht in dem vorliegenden Buch. Diskutiert wird unter anderem die Frage, warum die Bundeswehr in Mali ist und inwiweit sie dabei eher Teil des Problems oder Teil der Problemlösung ist.Im Mittelpunkt steht die These, dass die objektiven Interessen Deutschlands, in Deutschland und weltweit, vielfältige ökologische, soziale und politische Probleme in sich bergen, weshalb es notwendig erscheint, die Reproduktionsbedingungen und damit die objektiven Interessen zu verändern
