Zahnimplantate sind wertvolle Hilfsmittel zur Wiederherstellung verlorener Zähne. Implantate sind in vielen Formen, Größen und Längen erhältlich und werden aus einer Vielzahl von Materialien mit unterschiedlichen Oberflächeneigenschaften hergestellt. Zu den wichtigsten Eigenschaften eines Implantats zählen diejenigen, die gewährleisten, dass sich die Gewebe-Implantat-Grenzfläche schnell bildet und anschließend fest erhalten bleibt. Es ist besonders schwierig zu beurteilen, ob die verschiedenen Modifikationen bei den neuesten Implantaten eine verbesserte Leistung bieten. Bislang liefert die Metaanalyse randomisierter klinischer Studien keine Belege dafür, dass ein bestimmter Implantattyp einen besseren Langzeiterfolg aufweist. Der Erfolg und die Langlebigkeit von Implantaten hängen stark von den Oberflächeneigenschaften ab. Obwohl die besprochenen Methoden erfolgreich entwickelt und zur Herstellung von Zahnimplantaten mit unterschiedlichen Oberflächentopografien eingesetzt wurden, ist die Forschung auf diesem Gebiet sehr aktiv, und in naher Zukunft werden mehrere neue Technologien und Methoden zur Herstellung verschiedener Implantattopografien eingeführt werden.
