A perturbação bipolar é uma doença crónica e debilitante que afecta as pessoas diagnosticadas, os seus entes queridos e a sociedade em geral. Enquanto a incidência da TPB continua a aumentar, a eficácia da medicação diminui, deixando as pessoas com TPB com uma perspetiva sombria para o seu futuro. Atualmente, não existe uma forma altamente eficaz de tratar a DBP que permita a remissão total dos sintomas. Este estudo procurou examinar o papel dos estilos de vinculação, da regulação das emoções e dos traumas de infância no desenvolvimento e no curso da doença. Foram efectuadas pesquisas para localizar investigações publicadas na área da DBP, dos seus sintomas e perturbações concomitantes e da sua relação com os estilos de vinculação, a regulação emocional e a incidência de traumas na infância. Foram procuradas explicações alternativas para a hereditariedade e a elevada incidência familiar da perturbação.
