Este estudo examina a relação entre guerra e identidade pós-colonial numa série de obras literárias africanas e americanas. Esta investigação centra-se na literatura do autor deslocado do século XX, tal como expressa em obras ficcionais que mostram como os traumas pessoais refletem a experiência coletiva. Este estudo explora as formas como vários escritores pós-coloniais representativos apresentaram as consequências psicológicas e políticas do trauma pós-guerra ao longo de várias gerações. Argumenta que a Primeira Guerra Mundial e a Segunda Guerra Mundial tiveram um impacto profundo na forma como a vida tem sido vivida, como se pode ver nas obras de escritores africanos como Chinua Achebe, J.M. Coetzee, Nadine Gordimer e Doris Lessing, e americanos, como Saul Bellow, Don DeLillo, Cormac McCarthy, Philip Roth, Leslie Marmon Silko e John Edgar Wideman. A tese propõe um método para ler textos canónicos de escritores pós-coloniais como narrativas de protesto, transgressão e regeneração.
