Em 2000, o governo egípcio aprovou a lei do Khul (divórcio sem culpa), na esperança de combater a discriminação contínua contra as mulheres egípcias. Este artigo defende que, apesar de o Islão ter concedido às mulheres direitos e oportunidades iguais aos dos homens, as mulheres egípcias enfrentam discriminação legal no âmbito do casamento e do divórcio, e é por isso que recorrem ao Khul. O Khul revelou-se um instrumento alternativo para as mulheres egípcias escaparem a casamentos infelizes. Contrariamente às expectativas, o Khul tem beneficiado tanto as mulheres ricas como as mulheres pobres.
