A Declaração dos Direitos do Homem e do Cidadão, promulgada em 26 de agosto de 1789, desempenhou um papel significativo na transformação do mundo atlântico durante o final do século XVIII e teve um grande impacto na sociedade escravista da colónia francesa de Saint-Domingue, conhecida desde 1804 como Haiti. Os negros livres, ou gens de couleur, usaram a postulação da declaração para acabar com a discriminação dos brancos em Saint-Domingue. Essa luta dos negros livres durou dois anos, até que o maior grupo da ilha, quase meio milhão de escravos, se levantou e exigiu seus direitos, o que levou a um caos total na ilha. A rebelião dos escravos terminou finalmente com a abolição da escravatura e a aplicação da declaração de direitos em Saint-Domingue em 1793. Os acontecimentos em França durante os primeiros quatro anos da revolução e a luta dos negros em Saint-Domingue estão intimamente ligados.
