Esta investigação visa avaliar empiricamente os efeitos da migração interna na estrutura do emprego dos países em desenvolvimento. Um estudo aprofundado da população ugandesa permitiu confirmar a maioria das afirmações estabelecidas por economistas em investigações anteriores. De facto, graças à análise de inquéritos realizados em mais de 2500 famílias ugandesas, é possível tirar as seguintes conclusões. A migração é impulsionada em grande parte por expectativas de melhores padrões de vida. Além disso, esta análise mostrou que os jovens têm mais facilidade para migrar, enquanto o destino depende em grande parte do nível de escolaridade. Além disso, esses dados mostraram que a migração aumenta a probabilidade de se tornar trabalhador independente.
