Os assírios são provavelmente conhecidos, do público em geral, pelas narrativas da Bíblia, certamente em razão do terror que causara sua presença militar nas terras ocidentais no Levante, no que hoje conhecemos por Israel e Palestina. O relato dessas histórias acontece no início do primeiro milênio antes de Cristo e a Assíria, país que ocupou o que é hoje, principalmente, o norte do Iraque, era a superpotência da região, um império que florescia e sua máquina de guerra era inigualável. Porém, o panorama político poucos séculos atrás, no segundo milênio, era consideravelmente distinto. A evolução do estado assírio de cidade-Estado a Estado territorial fornece elementos que são os pilares da Assíria imperial do primeiro milênio a.C. Até chegar a império, era preciso fortalecer as instituições estatais, notadamente o rei, assim como as redes de comércio para obter as matérias-primas que não existiam na Mesopotâmia, o cobre para produzir o bronze ou inovar o ferro para suas armas, por exemplo, e se desvencilhar de potências vizinhas inimigas, que já viviam um intenso circuito internacional de jogos de poder e interesses econômicos, quando a Assíria era somente a cidade de Aššur. 10
