Rousseau é um filósofo que se nega a qualquer organização de seu pensamento, uma vez que, segundo seu próprio juízo, o raciocínio rebuscado e sistematizado obscurece a espontaneidade da intuição que, por outro lado, deve ser a mola propulsora da busca pela verdade. Nesse sentido, a obra do genebrino é feita de rupturas, de oposições e de numerosos momentos inaugurais: eis aí, aparentemente, o seu sistema constante. Para explicar essas rupturas e essas oposições assistemáticas que ocasionam diversos paradoxos, uma leitura unitária, mas não necessariamente ordenada, exige uma dupla forma de compreensão, quais sejam, do ponto de vista do método e do ponto de vista da doutrina. Estes dois aspectos estarão presentemente imbricados no percurso do nosso trabalho, exigindo na questão do método uma atenção redobrada, dado que, por ser bastante característico, requer uma exposição minuciosa, menos na intenção de demonstrar sua validade objetiva do que a forma através da qual o genebrino julga adequado à pesquisa da natureza humana.
