Durante quase toda a sua vida, o Padre Aleksandr Men` (1935-1990) viveu e trabalhou sob o regime opressivo do ateísmo militante da União Soviética. Depois de receber formação superior em biologia, Aleksandr estudou teologia em preparação para o sacerdócio ortodoxo russo. Passou os restantes trinta anos da sua vida a fazer trabalho pastoral em várias aldeias pouco ilustres perto de Moscovo. Aos 55 anos de idade, foi assassinado a caminho da liturgia dominical. Apesar das condições adversas em que trabalhou, o P. Men` desenvolveu uma impressionante atividade pastoral e académica, uma parte importante da qual relacionada com as religiões do mundo.
