Neste artigo, procuramos esclarecer a alquimia poética de Baudelaire na sua obra-prima Les Fleurs du mal, bem como a técnica com que este poeta-químico consegue transformar a ciência da alquimia num fenómeno estético imortal que perdura há séculos. Em primeiro lugar, a alquimia, atualmente conhecida como química, é uma ciência técnica e prática baseada na transformação de elementos básicos em metais nobres. Mais tarde, esta ciência penetrou com sucesso noutros domínios do conhecimento, como a astronomia, a filosofia, a literatura e até a medicina, graças ao seu carácter teórico-místico. No entanto, a alquimia parte do princípio de que os materiais medíocres, como o ferro, são originalmente elementos caros, como o ouro, mas que precisam de ser transformados várias vezes para atingirem a nobreza. O autor de Les Fleurs foi, sem dúvida, um dos primeiros a considerar este processo alquímico como um novo recurso de inspiração e como um campo muito fértil do qual poderia tirar partido no decurso das suas produções literárias.
