David Musgrave's seventh collection of poems is a kind of clearing: poems which open up, sometimes painfully, sometimes joyfully, what it is to be in the world. From obliquely confessional poems concerned with the death of his mother and the unexpected endings of significant relationships, to celebrations of new lives, this collection encompasses a wide range of emotions, attitudes, forms and styles. The poems show a significant sharpening from earlier work and increasingly move in the direction of uncompromising honesty. Numb and Number is an elegantly powerful collection by a significant poet who is entering a new and interesting phase of his career.I'm clearing a space in Waratah. Here, in Waratah, I'm making a clearing, marking out space among bluetongues, grevilleas, a conurbation of ants' nests. I'm making a space the size of a mid-range imagination, a modest keep, a distillation of hope. I'm chucking out, I'm ringing in, and I'm wiping clean.– 'Waratah'David Musgrave's most recent collection, Anatomy of Voice, was awarded the Arts Queensland Judith Wright Calanthe Award for Poetry. He is also the recipient of the Grace Leven Prize for Poetry for his collection Phantom Limb, and individual poems have been awarded many prizes. His novel Glissando was shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Award for Fiction in 2011. In 2005 he founded the publishing house Puncher & Wattmann. He lives in Newcastle with his family.

‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

  • The Truth about A
    Maureen O'Shaughnessy
In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides. Set in contemporary Sydney, among a fictional underworld family, The Truth abou...

And, backwards, it is about the power of language to discover and surprise us. The Kool-Aid Dispenser contains poems of loss, balanced by as many that celebrate renewal and hope. The elegies which make up...

  • On Reflection
    David Musgrave
On Reflection carries two subtitles, second of which, ‘A Novelty’ comes some way to suggesting Musgrave’s refreshing wit. This collection showcases his inventiveness as he constructs in alternating prose and verse sections a portrait of the poet as a young flaneur, compressing the events of weeks into something like a day in the life. The poems are sinuous rhythmic variants on ...
