Now East Now West

'Now East Now West' is a sophisticated social satire that explores the cultural clash between American ambition and British tradition during the 1920s. The story follows Alix and George Goodall, a wealthy American couple who relocate from New York to London, only to find themselves navigating the intricate and often baffling labyrinth of the English class system. While Alix is quickly seduced by the allure of high society and the thrill of social climbing, George remains steadfastly American, feeling increasingly alienated by the rigid customs and unspoken rules of his new environment. Susan Ertz masterfully portrays the shifting dynamics of their marriage as these differing reactions to their surroundings create an ever-widening rift. Through witty dialogue and keen observation, the novel explores themes of national identity, the pursuit of status, and the complexities of human relationships under pressure.A quintessential comedy of manners, 'Now East Now West' offers a compelling look at the transatlantic divide and the personal transformations that occur when individuals are uprooted from the familiar. It stands as a vibrant portrait of the Jazz Age social scene, capturing the essence of an era caught between old-world elegance and new-world energy. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
