Miguel de Cervantes publicó sus Novelas ejemplares en 1613 en una colección editada en Madrid por Juan de la Cuesta.Son doce novelas cortas, toda una innovación dentro del género, caracterizadas por la impecable construcción de sus personajes, la fluidez de la narración, la viveza de sus diálogos y el tono realista.
