A investigação tem-se centrado na identificação de novos agentes patogénicos ocultos que possam contribuir para a patogénese da doença periodontal. A periodontite crónica parece ter uma etiologia bacteriana complexa. Apesar das modalidades terapêuticas avançadas que visam a eliminação completa dos agentes patogénicos periodontais, a prevalência das doenças periodontais está a aumentar. O advento de métodos moleculares como a PCR, técnicas de hibridação e sondas de ADN tornou possível a identificação de espécies não cultivadas. Os novos agentes patogénicos incluídos na filogenia periodontal incluem Cryptobacterium curtum, Dialister pneumosintes, Filifactor alocis, Mitsuokella dentalis, Slackia exigua, Selenomonas sputigena, Solobacterium moorei, Treponema lecithinolyticum, Synergistes. Estes agentes patogénicos recentemente identificados foram classificados com base na associação significativa com a periodontite em níveis de associação mais elevados, moderados e mais baixos.
