Joseph John Gurney was an early champion of prison reform, and his 1823 visit to prisons in Scotland and England with the famous Quaker activist Elizabeth Fry helped to inspire much of his subsequent work in this field. This book documents his observations and reflections on prison conditions and the need for a more humane approach to incarceration. It remains a significant historical document on the subject of criminal justice, and an inspiring example of the power of social activism. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.This work is in the 'public domain in the United States of America, and possibly other nations.
