Schoolboy notebooks purchased at a garage sale are found to contain a screenplay in rough draft form and some diary-like entries from that screenplay’s author. The screenplay tells the story of a killer who finds himself in a hospital bed after having suffered brain damage that’s crippled him, the result of a motorcycle wreck he’s been in after a bungled assassination attempt. The diary tells of another young man, the would-be screenwriter with that very same brain damage, who also finds himself to have been crippled after a motor scooter wreck. And what we come to learn in the course of the telling is that there were no accidents here. Even more than this, the two stories, the real and the fiction come together again and again in a most unusual manner, that will have the author still trying to explain what happened forty years later.

Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
