''Not Pretty But Precious'' is a book written by John Hay that tells the story of his life as a young man growing up in rural England during the 1940s and 1950s. The book is a memoir that chronicles Hay’s experiences as a child and teenager, including his struggles with poverty, illness, and family dysfunction. Despite the challenges he faced, Hay managed to find joy and meaning in his life through his love of nature, his passion for learning, and his deep connections with the people around him. The book is a poignant and inspiring tale of resilience, perseverance, and the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity. For one moment I resisted the unreasonable terror, and made an attempt to explain, or at least analyze, a sensation so unwonted: the next, the loathing dread grew too strong. I turned and hurried across the damp floor, up the narrow stairs, and, opening the door, made my way as quickly as possible into the outside air. The dog was waiting for me in the little shed, and seemed delighted at seeing me again. I closed the door, ashamed of my senseless fright, but nevertheless I was thankful that I had found no trouble in getting out. I am not quite prepared to say, however, that these sudden and apparently unreasonable starts are independent of external causes. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
