Nostromo ist ein im Jahre 1904 erschienener komplexer politischer Roman. Schauplatz des Romans ist die fiktive Republik Costaguana. Sie steht für ein Klischee Südamerikas, in dessen Geschichte Bürgerkriege und Diktaturen ständig wechseln. Die Romanfigur Decoud sagt über diese Republik 'mit einem Simon Bolivar zugeschriebenen Zitat' (Wolter), sie sei 'nicht zu regieren. Wer für seine Befreiung tätig war, hat das Meer gepflügt'. Als Vorbild für die Stadt Sulaco, die als Hafenstadt eine besondere Rolle in dem Roman spielt, diente Conrad die Hafenstadt Cartagena in Kolumbien, die er auf seinen ersten Fahrten als Schiffsmaat auf französischen Schiffen in die Karibik und nach Südamerika flüchtig kennenlernte. Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) war ein Schriftsteller polnischer Herkunft, der seine Werke in englischer Sprache verfasste. Seine bekanntesten Werke sind die Romane Lord Jim, Nostromo und Herz der Finsternis. Letzteres ist bis heute der meistzitierte und wirkmächtigste Roman. 3
