'Northern Barbarian Realms' is now republished as 'Once we were Barbarians.' It surveys the history and genetics of the ancient northern Europeans, considered barbarians by the Romans, with emphasis on the Germanics, Celts and Vikings. It also describes the waves of horse riding 'barbarians' who invaded and often colonised ancient Europe, from the Scythians to the Mongols.
