I 1903-06 ble Roald Amundsen den første som førte en skute gjennom passasjen nord for det amerikanske kontinentet. Med et mannskap på seks, under ledelse av Roald Amundsen, nådde skuta Stillehavet i 1906 etter en reise på over tre år. Med på ekspedisjonen var (foruten Amundsen) Anton Lund, Helmer Hanssen, Peder Ristvedt, Godfred Hansen, Gustav Juel Wiik og Henrik Lindstrøm. Hanssen og Lindstrøm fulgte også Amundsen på senere ekspedisjoner.Nordvestpassasjen er fortellingen om ekspedisjonen med Gjøa, om utforskningen av den magnetiske Nordpolen og om folkene de møtte.
