La conquista y colonización de Mesoamérica planteó a los españoles el desafío de comprender y gobernar una sociedad nativa muy compleja y diversa. Al mismo tiempo los diferentes grupos que la conformaban debieron afrontar la necesidad de adaptarse a un gobierno y a la presencia de colonizadores cuyas intenciones y propósitos no comprendían del todo. Fueron años difíciles porque los violentos episodios de la conquista estaban muy presentes, mientras se entrecruzaban las utopías señoriales de los conquistadores, los sueños misioneros de crear una nueva y más perfecta cristiandad, los intereses particulares de la Corona, las maniobras de la nobleza nativa para preservar su lugar privilegiado y los intentos del común de los indios por sobrevivir y medrar en el nuevo orden. En este contexto, puede verse cómo paulatinamente se introducen y establecen instituciones, leyes y relaciones de convivencia que van a dar lugar a la tumultuosa creación de una nueva sociedad.
