С развитием науки и для лечения психических заболеваний возникла психиатрия с фигурой психиатра. Психически больные существовали всегда, их боялись, ими восхищались, высмеивали, пытали, изгоняли, но вряд ли вылечивали. Культурный процесс накладывает на человека ограничения и осуществляет постепенное подавление. Чтобы стать частью социальной среды, он должен одомашнить себя, подавить свои импульсы и инстинкты. Поэтому Юнг (1979:20) утверждает, что 'избыток животности деформирует культурного человека; избыток культуры порождает больных животных'.
