Фотодинамическая терапия (ФДТ) широко используется в медицине для лечения опухолей, предзлокачественных образований, макулярной дегенерации и псориаза, а в стоматологии - для лечения пародонтальных карманов, простого герпеса и других микробных поражений. Эта терапия заключается в сочетании низкоинтенсивного источника света с красителем. Бактерии, грибки, дрожжи и вирусы также могут быть уничтожены с помощью видимого света после обработки соответствующим фотосенсибилизатором. В этом исследовании эффект PDT на зубные альвеолы нижних третьих моляров сразу после удаления был проверен 'in vivo', показав резкое снижение количества размножающихся микроорганизмов, статистически значимое уменьшение боли и отека, а также улучшение внешнего вида рубца через семь дней.
