Цель данной работы - исследовать, как эгалитарный либерализм узаконивает проведение политики позитивных действий для борьбы с определенным неравенством в обществе. Для этого в качестве центрального источника для обсуждения эгалитарного либерализма и того, как он оправдывает проведение такой политики, используется книга Джона Роулза 'Справедливость как честность'. Теория справедливости Роулза предлагает разработать принципы справедливости для оценки базовой структуры общества в зависимости от того, как она регулирует распределение соответствующего уровня первичных благ, рассматриваемых как средства и социальные условия, необходимые для адекватного развития каждого гражданина. Учитывая, что неравный доступ к этим благам и их распределение ставят под угрозу продолжительность жизни людей, порождая серьезное социальное и экономическое неравенство, позитивные действия работают как механизм равенства и социальной справедливости, устраняя некоторые из этих неравенств, гарантируя реальные возможности, открытые для всех на справедливой основе, включая доступ к государственным должностям, социальным позициям и качественному образованию.
