Trotz hochtrabender Rhetorik und ehrgeiziger Ziele wurden und werden in Nigeria weder die Ziele der Entwicklungshilfe noch die Ziele derer, die sich für ausländische Direktinvestitionen zur Armutsbekämpfung einsetzen, erreicht. Diese Studie untersucht, warum ausländische Direktinvestitionen und Auslandshilfe in Subsahara-Afrika Klientelismus begünstigen, was wiederum zu menschlicher Unsicherheit in der gesamten Region führt. Im Fall von Nigeria besteht ein inhärentes Dilemma zwischen Hilfe und Investitionen auf der einen Seite und Klientelismus, Zugang und Korruption auf der anderen Seite. Die US-Auslandshilfe und ausländische Direktinvestitionen in Nigeria begünstigen und verstärken Klientelismus und Korruption, was wiederum zu menschlicher Unsicherheit führt.
