Jens Peter Jacobsen / Hanna Astrup Larsen
Jacobsen (1847-85) was a Danish novelist, poet and scientist who began the naturalist movement in Danish literature and was part of the Modern Breakthrough. Niels Lyhne, the second of his two novels which was first published in 1880, traces the fate of an atheist in a merciless world whose lack of faith is tested by tragedies and personal crises. Reprinted from the English translation of 1919. 3
