Sobre IBD

In this, the seventh edition of the New Contexts anthologies, the quality of the submissions, their breadth of subject matter and style, remain joyously undiminished. It is a heady mix. And whilst it would be possible to pick out certain themes - those ’big’ topics which have tormented and challenged writers for hundreds of years - to do so would perhaps be unfair. Every piece in this collection deserves to be here, and thus deserves equal focus.Confident that New Contexts: 7 contains something for everyone, I hope you enjoy it.

Now focus on a small coffee shop in a provincial town and consider its patrons and the people already connected to those patrons: the café owner, the gallery manager, the consultant, the ’self-made man’, the femme fatal...

Although you might be tempted to group the subjects which preoccupy writers into broad categories - love, grief, war, nature and so forth - the truth remains that creative writing is triggered by an infinite variety of moments, thoughts, experiences. Not only do New Contexts’ contributors immerse themselves in this bottomless pool of inspiration, they can also be relied upon to...

Some say there is but a thin dividing line between tragedy and comedy, victory and defeat. Many of the protagonists in Dead-heading Roses in the Museum Garden and Other Stories find themselves treading just such a line - and often falling on the less desirable side of it. Consider the bride abandoned at the altar, the young woman being told ’no’ in the Social Security office, t...
