El presente texto busca señalar, mediante una profundización interdisciplinar entre ciencia, filosofía y teología, cuál es el estado actual del problema mente-cerebro, cuerpo-alma, en el debate científico y cultural contemporáneo. Pretende evidenciar, al mismo tiempo, los alcances y los límites de la investigación neurocientífica en temas trascendentales para el ser humano, como la conciencia y la libertad. Asimismo, muestra con claridad las consecuencias de la aproximación materialista, naturalista o fisicalista al problema de la mente humana, resaltando cómo puede llegar a desdibujar nuestra experiencia moral.Ciertamente el cerebro y la mente siguen siendo, en gran medida, un misterio que se va desvelando de forma progresiva. Pero, para aproximarse a tan apasionante cuestión y desafío, es necesario no circunscribirse exclusivamente a la racionalidad científica, que puede pecar de 'cientificista', sino abrirse a otras formas de racionalidad, como la filosófica. Del mismo modo, ni la filosofía -en especial la antropología filosófica-, ni la teología pueden desarrollarse en el mundo actual al margen de los conocimientos sólidamente establecidos por la neurociencia. Una visión completa del ser humano requiere de la interdisciplinariedad, especialmente en temas como la conciencia, la libertad y el alma.
