This is a historical novella set in Eastern Kentucky, in Appalachia. Elanor Rose ’Nelle’ Keller and her younger sister, Josephine Joy ’Pheen’ Keller grow up in a close-knit family along Brushy Fork in Lawrence County, Kentucky, in the years preceding and including World War II. Beautiful, headstrong Nelle moves confidently through life to achieve her dreams. Shyer, quieter Pheen watches her big sister with awe. While Pheen worries and frets about the coming of war, Nelle throws caution to the wind. The story explores the bond between the two sisters and whether love can survive tragedy.
