Nella primavera del 1934, il celebre esploratore ungherese László Ede de Almásy organizzò la sua terza e ultima spedizione dedicata alla ricerca della leggendaria oasi di Zerzura. Sponsorizzata dal Royal Automobile Club d’Egypte e dal quotidiano egiziano Al-Ahram, la spedizione trova narrazione nei libri di Almásy e Hansjoachim Von der Esch, e negli articoli giornalistici di Ugo Dadone e Hassan Sobhi. In una forma che si potrebbe dire sotterranea, esiste poi un quinto racconto generato dai documenti riservati del governo italiano, all’epoca interessato alle implicazioni diplomatiche della spedizione che si svolse attraverso l’Egitto, il Sudan Anglo-Egiziano e la Libia. Ricostruendo la storia della spedizione e la biografia di Ugo Dadone, a ottanta anni di distanza, si rendono finalmente disponibili al lettore italiano i due reportage, il primo sopravvissuto in unica copia, il secondo finalmente tradotto dall’arabo.
