Ned Myers Or A Life Before The Mast is a memoir written by James Fenimore Cooper. The book follows the life of Ned Myers, a sailor who served in the United States Navy during the War of 1812. The story is told in the first person and is based on the real-life experiences of Myers. The book begins with Myers’ childhood in New York City and his early years as a sailor. It then follows his journey as he works his way up the ranks in the Navy, serving on various ships and taking part in several battles. Myers’ experiences provide a vivid and detailed account of life at sea during this time period, including the hardships and dangers faced by sailors.Throughout the book, Myers’ loyalty and dedication to the Navy are highlighted, as well as his sense of duty and honor. The book also touches on themes of friendship, sacrifice, and the impact of war on individuals and society.Overall, Ned Myers Or A Life Before The Mast is a fascinating and insightful memoir that provides a unique perspective on life at sea during the early 19th century. It is a must-read for anyone interested in naval history or the experiences of sailors during this time period.I walked over the ground where the explosion took place. It was a dreadful sight; the dead being so mutilated that it was scarcely possible to tell their colour. I saw gun-barrels bent nearly double. I think we saw Sir Roger Sheafe, the British General, galloping across the field, by himself, a few minutes before the explosion. At all events, we saw a mounted officer, and fired at him. He galloped up to the government-house, dismounted, went in, remained a short time, and then galloped out of town. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
