Embora a teoria da autodeterminação (SBT) tenha sido bem estudada nas últimas três décadas em várias áreas e culturas (Deci & Ryan, 2017), há relativamente pouca investigação sobre o tema na gerontologia (Ryan & Deci, 2000). Assim, as relações entre as três necessidades básicas de autonomia, competência e conexão social, bem como as reações a cenários que restringem essas necessidades, ainda não foram suficientemente investigadas. Este trabalho procura preencher uma dessas lacunas, registando as relações entre estas três necessidades básicas e as estratégias de reação positivas de valência, intensidade e relevância como reações a eventos que ameaçam as necessidades em idosos. Foi analisada uma amostra de 136 participantes (59% mulheres, 41% homens) com idade média de 71 anos (M=71,45, DP=6,27).
