In ’Neath the Hollow Hill, the main character, Brian Nolan, travels to Ireland in search of solitude and inspiration after a painful breakup. He aims to complete his latest novel while exploring his Irish heritage. He hopes that a three-month writer’s retreat in a rural cottage near Killarney will restore his sense of well-being and creativity. He soon discovers that his landlord, Seamus, is no ordinary schoolteacher, but is a member of a small group of modern-day druids. Brian is welcomed into the community and experiences a growing sense of belonging and attachment. A magical older woman mystifies and aids him in his emotional journey.Though he shed his creative blocks, the other reason for coming to Ireland, his heartbreak, again emerges as he finds himself forced to choose between two lovely Irish women. The obstacles mount: immigration issues and resentment from local men, leading to physical confrontations. Brian considers leaving Ireland, despite his growing connection to the community and ancient traditions. He struggles to find what he wants in his life, and more importantly, who he wants in his life.
