Mit dem Titel meines Beitrages ist schon der interdisziplinare Charakter des Forschungsgehietes angedeutet, uher das ich heute herichten mochte. Die inter­ disziplinare Bedeutung der OherfHichenforschung solI deshalh einen wesentlichen Akzent fUr die Darstellung setzen. Ich hatte nehen Physik und Chemie auch hin­ zusetzen konnen 'Die Festkorperoherflache im Bereich der Materialwissenschaf­ ten, der Halhleitertechnologie, der Verfahrenstechnik, der heterogenen Katalyse, der Trihologie'. Man hatte versuchen konnen, in das Thema schon mit einzuhe­ ziehen die ungeheure volkswirtschaftliche Bedeutung chemischer Prozesse an Festkorperoherflachen, seien sie erwiinscht, wie im Faile der heterogenen Kata­ lyse,oder seien sie unerwiinscht, wie im Faile von Korrosionserscheinungen. Diese vielfaItigen Bezuge kann ich aher heute nur andeuten, zum einen, weil fUr eine tie­ fergehende Behandlung die Zeit nicht ausreichen wiirde, zum anderen auch des­ halh, weil ich mich nicht fUr aile Aspekte kompetent fuhlen konnte. So mochte ich also heute yom eigenen Standort aus versuchen zu uherhlicken, welche Phanomene an der Festkorperoherflache eine Rolle spielen und wie man sie studieren kann. Der eigene Standort ist der eines Festkorperphysikers, fur den sich die Fragestellungen der Oherflachenphysik zunachst einmal aus seiner Kennt­ nis der Volumeneigenschaften des Festkorpers ergehen. Als Spezialgehiet der Festkorperphysik ist die Oberflachenforschung noch ein relativ junges Arheitsfeld. Von einzelnen Vorlauferarheiten ahgesehen liegt der Beginn der physikalisch-experimentellen Oherflachenforschung etwa im Beginn der sechziger Jahre.
