Nach sechzig Jahren französischer Kolonialherrschaft (1893-1960) erlangte die Elfenbeinküste am 7. August 1960 ihre Unabhängigkeit mit einer heterogenen Bevölkerung, die sich aus etwa sechzig Völkern zusammensetzte. Nichts prädestinierte diese Völker vor der Kolonialisierung für ein 'gemeinsames Schicksal'. In den ersten drei Jahrzehnten der Unabhängigkeit förderten die von Félix Houphouët-Boigny verfolgte Politik der nationalen Integration und die Traditionen der genannten Völker eine relative politische und soziale Stabilität, die der nationalen Einheit förderlich war. Seit dem Tod von Houphouët-Boigny ist die Elfenbeinküste jedoch in eine beispiellose soziale Spaltung geraten, die hauptsächlich mit politischen und interethnischen Konflikten sowie dem Staatsstreich von 1999 zusammenhängt. Wie konnte dieses Land, das lange Zeit als politisches, wirtschaftliches und soziales Modell in einem krisengeschüttelten Afrika galt, nach dem Tod von Präsident Felix Houphouët-Boigny in eine echte soziale Spaltung geraten? Dieses Buch lädt die Ivorer und später die Afrikaner und andere Völker der Welt dazu ein, die Notwendigkeit der Frage der nationalen Integration in den postkolonialen afrikanischen Staaten im Allgemeinen und in der Elfenbeinküste im Besonderen zu verstehen.
