Narrative Of Joseph Samuel C. F. Frey (1833) is a memoir written by Joseph Samuel Christian Frederick Frey, a German-American who was born into slavery in Charleston, South Carolina in the late 18th century. The book recounts Frey’s experiences as a slave, his escape to freedom, and his subsequent life as a free man. Frey’s narrative provides a rare firsthand account of the brutality and inhumanity of slavery, as well as the resilience and determination of those who fought against it. He describes the physical and emotional abuse he suffered at the hands of his masters, as well as the dehumanizing conditions that he and other slaves were forced to endure. Despite the incredible obstacles he faced, Frey was able to escape to freedom in 1808, eventually settling in New York City where he became a prominent member of the city’s African American community. He worked as a teacher and a minister, and was involved in various abolitionist and civil rights organizations. Frey’s narrative is an important historical document that sheds light on the realities of slavery in the United States, as well as the struggles and triumphs of those who fought against it. It is a powerful and moving testimony to the strength of the human spirit in the face of oppression and injustice. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
