Die Nanotechnologie in der Endodontie umfasst den Einsatz von Nanopartikeln (1-100 nm) zur Verbesserung der Diagnose, Desinfektion, Regeneration und der Behandlungsergebnisse im Wurzelkanal. Aufgrund ihrer geringen Größe und großen Oberfläche dringen Nanopartikel effektiver in Dentintubuli und Biofilme ein als herkömmliche Materialien. Zu den häufig verwendeten Nanopartikeln zählen Silber, Chitosan, Zinkoxid, bioaktives Glas und Nano-Hydroxylapatit, die über starke antimikrobielle und biokompatible Eigenschaften verfügen. Die Nanotechnologie verbessert Spülflüssigkeiten, intrakanaläre Medikamente, Sealer und Restaurationsmaterialien, indem sie deren antibakterielle Wirkung, Versiegelungsfähigkeit, Festigkeit und Haltbarkeit steigert. Zudem unterstützt sie die regenerative Endodontie durch Nanogerüste und gezielte Wirkstoffabgabesysteme. Trotz Bedenken hinsichtlich Zytotoxizität, Kosten und begrenzter Langzeitstudien zeigt die Nanotechnologie ein erhebliches Potenzial für den Fortschritt der modernen endodontischen Therapie und die Verbesserung des klinischen Erfolgs.
