Le fibre di carbonio, in particolare quelle di carbonio attivo, hanno suscitato un interesse costante come supporti funzionali per nanostrutture contenenti metalli, grazie alla loro morfologia fibrosa, all’elevata superficie specifica e alla struttura porosa sviluppata. La presente rassegna analizza studi recenti dedicati alla formazione di fasi contenenti ferro sulle superfici delle fibre di carbonio ed esamina le relazioni tra le condizioni di sintesi, le caratteristiche strutturali e le proprietà funzionali dei compositi risultanti. Particolare attenzione è rivolta al ruolo della deposizione del precursore, dei regimi di essiccazione e del trattamento termico nel controllo della composizione di fase, della dimensione delle particelle e della dispersione delle specie di ferro all’interno della matrice di carbonio. La letteratura indica che le prestazioni funzionali delle fibre di carbonio modificate con ferro sono determinate non solo dalla natura chimica della fase ferrosa, ma anche dalla sua distribuzione spaziale e dall’interazione con il supporto di carbonio. Tra le applicazioni discusse figurano la catalisi eterogenea, il trattamento delle acque basato sull’adsorbimento e i processi di separazione assistiti magneticamente.
